unplugged and editing old video

Ah. Just another quicky. I spent a week away from facebook which is the last social media platform that I use, except for youtube, more of a publishing platform and reference resource than social media as I see it. The news cycle finally overwhelmed me and I chose to turn it all off. This is highly recommended.

Another little ditty that I have put together is a re-edit of lots of video footage from a trip to Costa Rica back in 2012. Imagery of a beautiful and fascinating place during happier days seemed a perfect refuge from what is starting to feel more and more like an endless pandemic. I had put together something with it before but ran into problems with the music, something that seems to have happened a lot back in that era, at least to me. Now, I’m trying again using music from artlist and will see how that goes. Also, I’m using a new approach with video, 551 clips over 18 minutes, more natural audio carried over from the clips, and more of an artistic approach. Just imagery. I’m trying to convey the experience without the enthusiastic description that accompanies most internet videos. A whole lot of verisimilitude, borrowed from the style of literature that I most enjoy. Mainly plants. Lots and lots of plants. Also people and monkeys and other stuff. Also fun to edit. It can be found in my video galleries here.

Other videos that could be re-edited and posted are from San Antonio, Texas, coastal Oregon, and Glacier National Park. I hope to get around to those at some point when I have a little time.

I’m down in southern Nevada as the long spring of perfect weather is about to begin so want to spend some time photographing and shooting video of sites along the Colorado River: Lake Mead, the Valley of Fire, and Gold Butte. And am working on transferring some portraiture techniques from still photography to video, using studio lighting and the sigma fp. I was originally drawn to the fp because of its high-contrast, low-light, highly-textured, almost gritty capabilities and am pushing those into the realm of portraiture. So far with interesting results.
